Mr. James H. Lee Obituary (1922

WEST DENNIS - James H. “Jim” “Shorty” Lee, 95, of Wrinkle Point, West Dennis, MA, formerly of Attleboro, passed away on April 12, 2017 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of Phyllis Hodge Lee for 67 years. Born February 14, 1922 in Attleboro, he was the fourth of five children of the late Patrick F. and Bridget A. (Doohan) Lee. Jim attended Attleboro public schools and graduated from Attleboro High School in 1940. He excelled in athletics, earning varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. Years later, he was inducted into both the Attleboro Area Football Hall of Fame and the Attleboro High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He began classes at Providence College in 1941 but left school to enlist in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. He completed training at Clemson College and then served as a Navigator in the Pacific until 1945. Upon completion of the War, he returned to PC and graduated in 1947. Jim began his career in the finance department at The Peerless Company and retired as the Executive Vice President of Finance for Stuarts Department Stores in 1988. He was the owner of Stone Ends restaurant in Attleboro. He was instrumental in establishing the Attleboro Area Football Hall of Fame in 1971, working closely with friends Bill Madden (a former Attleboro High AD) and Bucky Gay, the organization’s first chairman. During the early years of the Attleboro Area Football Hall of Fame, Jim donated staffing, food and the use of facilities at Stone Ends restaurant. In addition to recognizing outstanding football players from Attleboro, North Attleboro and Bishop Feehan, the Hall of Fame awards scholarships to numerous student athletes. He was a communicant at St. John the Evangelist in Attleboro and St. Pius X in South Yarmouth and served as the Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus St. John Council. He and his wife, Phyllis, were long time members of Highland Country Club and in his later years he could be seen on the sidelines at his grandchildren’s sporting events. “Shorty” had an amazing memory, well known for reminiscing with old and young alike. He enjoyed golfing, working in his yard as well as summering at and later retiring to the Cape. In addition to his beloved wife, Phyllis, Jim is survived by his three devoted daughters and their husbands; Nancy Lee Monroe and Mark of Attleboro, Debra Lee Mark and Glenn of North Attleboro and Judy Lee Veilleux and Henry of Bedford, NH and his seven treasured grandchildren: Michaela Lee Monroe, Erika Lauren Mark, Brendan James Monroe, Jeffrey Lewis Mark, Lindsay Elizabeth Veilleux, Brett Alexander Veilleux and Julia Lee Mark. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia Lee Borden of Attleboro and was predeceased by his brothers; William F. Lee of Carmel, California, Atty. John P. Lee and the Hon. Edward A. Lee of Attleboro. Jim also leaves many cherished nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Tuesday, April 18th from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck Street, Attleboro. A celebration of his 95 years of life will be held Wednesday, April 19th at 10 a.m. from the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main St., Attleboro. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, West Street, Attleboro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the James H. Lee Scholarship Fund at the Attleboro Area Football Hall of Fame.
