July 27, 1940 - November 11, 2021
Carol Ann (McGinn) Carignan, born July 27th, 1940, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 11, 2021, at 81 years of age, with the love of her family surrounding her. Carol’s final wish was to be home when she passed, and in a very special sense, she did just that. Beloved wife of Richard Carignan of 58 years. Daughter of the late Mary A. (McCormick) and Vincent McGinn. Loving mother of Christopher Carignan and his wife Kathleen of Kensington, NH; Lisa Carignan of Pawtucket, RI; and Kim Carignan of Attleboro. Cherished grandmother of Patrick Carignan of New York and Jack Carignan of Boston. Adored sister of Dennis McGinn and his wife Kelly of Lexington Park, MD; David McGinn and his wife Dottie of Clifton, VA; Timothy McGinn and his wife Gloria of Rehoboth; and the late Colleen Rice McGinn and Michael McGinn. Carol also leaves many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Carol was born at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Massachusetts. She spent her formative school years in Attleboro and as a proud graduate of Attleboro High School, was selected to participate in the nursing program at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, MA. Carol graduated with distinction and after becoming a registered nurse, spent a brief time working at the Brockton VA Hospital. However, as fate would have it, she soon found a home at Sturdy Memorial. Carol would spend the better part of her 47-year career working at Sturdy Memorial in the OBGYN department where she cared for literally thousands of mothers and their newborn babies. Her career spanned generations in which she delivered babies who then grew up, became mothers and saw Carol once again, this time helping them to have their own babies at Sturdy. She touched so many lives in the Attleboro area by helping them to have a good beginning with her sweet care. Carol always set a personal example of what it meant to be a great nurse. In 2002, Sturdy Memorial and her peers recognized her nursing excellence by presenting her with the Florence Nightingale award. She was compassionate, dedicated, friendly and a mentor to many young nurses starting their careers. She once tried to retire after 37 years but decided retirement just wasn’t her “cup of tea”- she returned to Sturdy Memorial for another 10 years before she finally hung up her scrubs. Carol was a longtime communicant of Our lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Seekonk, serving as a Eucharistic Minister, an outreach to Homebound as well as a CCD teacher. At the end of her wonderful life of service and care, the place in which she worked and held dear to her heart, was the place that lovingly cared for her in her final days. Carol was home! The Carignan family would like to thank the wonderful staff and caregivers at Sturdy Memorial Hospital. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 from 4-8 PM at Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck Street, Attleboro. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, November 18, 2021 at 10 AM at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, Coyle Dr., Seekonk. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, 165 West St., Attleboro. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carol’s name, may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, 1 St. John’s Place, Attleboro, MA 02703.
