June 9, 1933 - April 21, 2021
Carla Jean (DePrizio) LaPlante, 87, resident of Attleboro since 1964 died peacefully with family by her side on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. Carla was the eldest of 4 girls raised in Mansfield by Italian and Lithuanian immigrants: Dr Carl DePrizio and Viola Romn, a nurse. She had fond memories of bowling and playing pool with her cousins, and spending time visiting her Italian grandparents at their neighborhood market. Carla graduated from Mansfield H.S. in 1951. Her father, a respected surgeon, inspired her to achieve her nursing degree from Boston College (Class of ‘55). She participated for over 40 years in the Nurses’ Health Study. In 1953, Carla met Francis LaPlante (d. 2015) at the local library, and he asked her to go dancing, which they enjoyed throughout 59 years of marriage. The devout Catholics and longtime parishioners of St. John’s married on Oct 1st, 1955. Carla always wanted a daughter and planned to call her Susan, yet Carla is survived by her 7 sons: Stephen (partner Jenn), of Walpole MA; Mark (wife Michelle LaPlante), Cumming GA; David, (widower of Brenda LaPlante), Kingston MA; Greg (wife Darlene LaPlante), Pawtucket RI; James (wife Deborah Race), Lincoln, MA; Robert, Palm Harbor, FL (partner Elena); Jeffrey (wife Veronica LaPlante), North Attleboro, MA; 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Carla had an intellectual curiosity, strong faith, and a passion for family. She had a love of politics, regularly listening to “Rust Limbaugh” and was a member of the League of Women Voters. She was an avid reader and specifically enjoyed reading the daily newspaper and discussing current events. She was a loyal Red Sox fan, enjoyed cooking, knitting sweaters for her children and grandchildren, traveling, gardening, and watching the birds at her feeder. She had a sweet tooth and welcomed any treat of white chocolate. While raising her family, she appreciated the time with her parents on Cape Cod, and in-laws who lived nearby. Many called Carla a spitfire because of her sharp wit, and humor which came in handy raising seven sons. When children came to her with a problem she would first ask “is this social or emotional”. The answer didn’t matter. It was time to move on. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation on Thursday, April 29, 2021 from 9-11 AM at Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck St., Attleboro. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 AM. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Attleboro. For the safety of those who wish to pay their respects, please do so in accordance with CDC, Federal and State guidelines including social distancing and the use of face masks.
